Even among the first public housing estates in Hong Kong, Oi Man Estate remains special. Its unique architecture and history have attracted moviemakers and visitors from afar. At the centre of the estate is Oi Man Plaza. Join us at Channel 823 to explore the unique attractions and fun activities at this exciting and story-filled place!
Located in the middle of Oi Man Plaza, Oi Man Café’s bright red sign and lion statues on each side of the entrance are quite the eye-catcher! As we entered the café on a recent Sunday afternoon, we were met with a bright orange interior which contrasted nicely with the green and beige walls of Oi Man Estate.
The tables were full, as residents of Oi Man came together in what seems to be their meet-up spot of choice. Ms Lai, who is over 70 years old, told us that she moved into Oi Man Estate in 1980 and has since visited the café daily for most of her meals. The staff there knew her requirements down to a “tea”, just as she knew all the names of the staff by heart. The café’s signature pineapple bun with butter holds its own among the vast interpretations by other traditional Hong Kong cafés.
The pineapple crust is not overly sweet while the bun has the perfect balance of texture and density. When combined with the mild fragrance of the generous slice of butter, the pineapple bun with butter makes an irresistible finger-licking treat for all ages. The café also serves classic food items such as Hong Kong-style satay beef noodles and egg tarts. Despite the non-stop barrage of orders and the busy waitstaff, the café has a relaxing atmosphere, which makes visitors feel at home.
Inside the shopping mall, you will find more stores with the word “Oi Man” in their names. Like the café, Oi Man School Uniform has been around for more than four decades. The store supplies tailor-made uniforms for over 100 primary, secondary schools and kindergartens throughout Hong Kong. Rooted in Oi Man, the store’s dedication to quality and service has earned it a stellar reputation all over Hong Kong.
If you grew up in Hong Kong, chances are you have had the thrill of visiting a stationery shop. At Oi Man Bookshop, plush toys are lined up on a storefront display, catching the eye of children walking by. We saw kids negotiating with their parents, begging for a new toy, and bargaining for at least a chance to play the ping-pong slot machine by the entrance.
On the second floor of Oi Man Plaza is Hong Kong’s largest indoor go-karting venue – 18 Challenge Karting. The spacious area is illuminated in blue while the racetracks are bordered with red and white protective barriers. Many young couples, groups of friends and families come at the weekend to challenge each other on the track. Here, even children under the age of five get to compete in their specialised vehicles.
There are two tracks in the arena: The Drift Land and the Formula Circuit, which provide different kinds of excitement. Spectators’ jaws often drop as they witness young kids speed away from seasoned racers using dexterity and top gear-esque moves.
There are also arcade games such as darts, basketball and air hockey at the venue and snacks available. Here, you are bound to find something enjoyable for you to spend the day!
