Surplus Food Collection and Donation Programme launches at Link Fresh Markets

As an environmentally responsible organisation, The Link supports the sustainable development of the community and allocates resources to energy saving, waste reduction and carbon emissions reduction measures. In its role as one of the main operators of Hong Kong’s fresh markets, The Link not only provides the community with daily necessities but also advocates the reduction of food waste. To achieve this goal, The Link has formed a partnership with Food Angel, a food rescue and food assistance programme established in 2011 by Bo Charity Foundation, to launch the Surplus Food Collection and Donation Programme in its fresh markets. Beginning on 24 November 2013, kind-hearted tenants from Sheung Tak Market in Tseung Kwan O, Chuk Yuen Market in Wong Tai Sin and Oi Man Market in Ho Man Tin have been delivering surplus food to the collection station in each market. The surplus food are then collected by Food Angel and transferred to the programme’s central kitchen, where they are categorised, screened and made into delicious and nutritious food boxes that are distributed to the needy for free.

The Link’s sustainable strategy reduces food waste and benefits the community

Rooted in the community, The Link supports community sustainability through various channels and through the development of a comprehensive and sustainable strategy that focuses on environmental protection, waste reduction and enhancing community environments. Through its extensive retail network, The Link has launched various unique green initiatives, such as the Surplus Food Collection and Donation Programme, which engages and empowers fresh markets' tenants to benefit the community while also reducing food waste.

Reducing food waste at its source

The Surplus Food Collection and Donation Programme enables tenants to eliminate food waste from going to landfills while also helping the needy in the community, helping The Link fulfill its corporate social responsibility. The surplus food donated by tenants are processed by Food Angel, which categorises, screens, handles and makes nutritious food while ensuring that quality and hygiene standards are maintained.
